Serhii Plokhii is one of the world's preeminent historians focusing on the history of Ukraine. He is director of the Ukrainian Research Institute (HURI) at Harvard University and author of several books, including The Last empire: The Final Days of the Soviet Union (2015), The Cossack Myth: History and Nationhood in the Age of Empires (2012).

Professor Plokhii's book, The Gates of Europe: A History of Ukraine (2015), was translated and published in Turkey in 2017 (Avrupa'nın Kapıları Ukrayna Tarihi). It has become one of the fundamental sources on Ukrainian history for Turkish readers.

In this seminar, professor Plokhii will present his book and discuss the challenges of reconceptualizing the history of Ukraine using the transnational approach and taking into consideration its multiethnic character.
